Trauma & Orthopaedics is a specialty that relates to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders, conditions and injuries of the skeletal system and the muscles, joints and ligaments associated with it.
The Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics in Tallaght University Hospital consists of a multidisciplinary team staffed by consultant surgeons, surgical staff, dedicated nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
Our Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons provide a wide range of emergency (trauma) and elective (planned) treatment to patients.
The Back Pain Screening Clinic sees patients referred with spinal disorders.
Trauma care includes treating fractures (broken bones). Tallaght University Hospital is the National Centre for Treatment of Pelvic and Acetabular fracture.
Our goal in the Trauma & Orthopaedic Department is to restore mobility and eliminate pain, so that patients can get back to participating in everyday life, living with confidence and maintaining independence.
As the Hospital is a teaching hospital of Trinity College, Dublin, we are committed to education in the Orthopaedic Department. The Consultants run education sessions three times a week for their surgical teams, which nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists can also attend. The Clinical Facilitator for Orthopaedics Vivienne Dick runs a Post Graduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing course for orthopaedic nurses, in conjunction with Trinity College.
