It is important to turn up at the appointed time and if for any reason that you cannot attend, it is important to inform us as soon as possible at (01) 4143737 or 4143762. Every effort is made to see your child at his/her appointed time but as we also have to serve the needs of the Emergency Department and Wards, delays can occur at times. We will endeavour to keep you informed at all times and we thank you for your understanding.

To enable your visit to run smoothly we have the following instructions:

  • Bring Two Adults with an anxious Child of any age.
  • We have limited space in our department so please Do Not bring any other children.
  • Some x-rays/Scans require your child to fast in advance, you will be told if this is necessary when your appointment is made.

Location:

On arrival at the main atrium, go past the reception desk and first bank of lifts and take the corridor to your right. Go down that corridor to the pedestrian crossing (black and white strips on the floor) and the children's x-ray is located on your left. The reception desk is just inside the door.

If for any reason you are unable to attend for your examination, please telephone the above number.

x-rays/Radiological Investigations

X-rays are special photographs that allow the doctor to see inside your body, they usually look at your bones and chest. A Radiographer is the person who takes the x-ray, later a Radiologist (special x-ray doctor) looks at them and then sends a report to your doctor.

All x-rays appointments have to be booked in advance and every effort is made to see your child at this appointed time. Our department does however provide services for the Wards, Emergency and Outpatient Departments so delays can occur. On any given day we will keep you informed of any delays. We thank you in advance for your understanding.

To enable your visit to run smoothly we have the following instructions:

  • Bring Two adults with ALL Children aged five and under, none of whom can be pregnant.
  • Bring Two Adults with an anxious Child of any age.

Scans/Ultrasound

Some scans require your child to fast, drink fluids or have a full bladder. The fasting times vary depending on the scan and the time of day it is to be performed. It should be noted that fasting means nothing to eat or drink from the specified time on the appointment card. Some scans also require your child to be admitted to the Day Ward (Beech Ward) on Level 2 of the National Children's Hospital. Here your child will be seen and registered by an admission officer, nurse and doctor prior to going for their scan. There are links below for more information on your childs individual scan.

There are many different types of scans and you will be given more detailed information in writing when your childs appointment is confirmed by the hospital.
