Description of Department/Service

Introduction

In our Operating Theatre Department our goal is to care for individuals undergoing invasive surgical and/or anaesthetic procedures in a holistic manner to ensure safe, effective and efficient patient care.

A systematic approach to holistic care must maintain the identity and dignity of each individual patient without prejudice to health status, their nationality, creed, or other beliefs.

Our patients will be cared for by appropriately qualified staff in a safe supportive environment whilst in the peri-operative environment.


The Operating Theatre Department at Tallaght Hospital provides round the clock scheduled and emergency surgery and critical care services for adult and paediatric patients at Tallaght Hospital. The department is staffed by

  • 127 Nurses
  • Nine Healthcare Assistants
  • 15 Theatre Porters
  • 22 Consultant Anaesthetist
  • 40 Consultant Surgeons

 The department consist of 

  • Anaesthetic Nurse –Led Preoperative patient assessment
  • Day of Surgery Admission Unit
  • 12 Bed Holding Bay
  • 12 Operating theatre rooms with adjoining anaesthetic rooms
  • 15 Bay Recovery Room
  • Three bedded Post Anaesthetic Care Unit
  • Emergency Response Nurse Bleep to attend ERT calls in the wards on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Additional areas covered by Anaesthetic Team: Radiology-MRI & CT.

Department Education

The department provides structured undergraduate teaching to student nurses of the Trinity College Dublin School of Nursing.

Structured Nursing Post-graduate education is also delivered in the department in conjunction  with Trinity College Dublin School of Nursing consisting of a   

  • Modular Programme in the Fundamental Principles of    
    Perioperative Nursing which has NMBI Category 1 approval
  • MSc Programme in Perioperative Nursing Fetac Level 5 Theatre
    Module for Healthcare Assistants is delivered in the department in conjunction with the Centre for Learning & Development in Tallaght Hospital.

 

Weekly in-service education is provided within the department to develop the knowledge skills of theatre staff to ensure holistic care is delivered to surgical patients.

Location & Contact Number

The Operating Theatre Department is located on Level 2 or the 1st

Floor in the Main Hospital. The easiest way to get there is to go through the main hospital entrance to the lifts in the main foyer. Take the lift to Level 2, turn along the corridor towards the left and follow the signs overhead for the theatre department.  There are coloured footprints on the floor for children to find their way to the Operating Theatre Department.

DOSA Day of Surgery Admission

Day of Surgery Admission (DOSA) patients & Day Case Patients:

 

These patients undergo Preoperative Assessment several days to weeks before surgery either over the telephone or else in person at the nurse-led Preoperative Assessment clinic located beside the hospital Day Ward (1st floor).  Once reviewed by the Preoperative Assessment nurses and passed fit for surgery this group of patients will be informed by the hospitals Admissions Office of a date for their surgery.

 

Day Case patients come in on the morning of their surgery and are discharged after surgery the same day. DOSA patients are admitted on the morning of their surgery and remain in the hospital overnight postoperatively.

PACU : Post Anaesthetic Care Unit

Post anaesthetic care Unit is designed to accommodate post-operative patients requiring short term ventilation and/or inotropic/pressor support. This includes elective and non-elective high risk surgical patients who can benefit from detailed observation and monitoring that cannot be provided on a general ward.

 PACU also accommodates unplanned critically ill medical or surgical patients requiring intensive care or high dependency care for whom there is no bed available in the intensive care unit.

 Visiting hours is 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm

Rest time is from 10pm to 6am

Other Information

Pastoral Care Services are available for patients. Nursing Staff will arrange for a member of the Pastoral Care Team to visit a patient or speak with their family if required. 
Valuables, (i.e. money and jewellery). We advise you not to bring valuables with you during an admission. The Hospital is not responsible for patients’ valuables, if kept by the patient.
